Our mission at Lightgate is to make public transport more efficient and comfortable by providing precise real-time occupancy data and innovative technologies. Our vision is to fundamentally change the way people experience public transport. We aim to create a future where real-time information and intelligent technologies are the standard for efficiency, comfort, and reliability in public transport. Through continuous innovation, we strive to revolutionize rail transport worldwide and promote sustainable mobility solutions.

The rail network in Germany is operating at more than 100 percent capacity in many locations, and traffic continues to grow. At S-Bahn Hamburg, we asked ourselves how we could further optimize operations in light of rising passenger numbers. Managing capacity and occupancy is a key factor in ensuring high service quality and passenger satisfaction. That’s why we needed a digital, innovative solution to manage train occupancy in real time.

We explored various technologies and, given the diverse train types that do not allow for in-vehicle installation, decided to start our own product development journey. With DB Lightgate, we measure occupancy by carriage and in real time. Instead of being installed on the trains, our system is installed in the infrastructure. Installation and maintenance therefore do not affect operations.

DB Lightgate has now been rolled out across the entire S-Bahn Hamburg network. But that’s not all. With our innovation, we aim to make rail transportation beyond Hamburg more efficient, reliable, and comfortable. We are continuously refining our product because we want to offer our customers a flexible, high-quality solution at all times for their operational use cases and passenger information. DB Lightgate is in use across five networks and measures thousands of train trips every day.
