Real-Time Rail Occupancy Monitoring

Product

As rail passenger transport evolves towards more sustainable practices, the need for real-time monitoring of train occupancy becomes crucial. Overcrowded carriages and uneven passenger distribution can lead to delays, safety concerns, and passenger dissatisfaction.

Traditional systems for tracking train occupancy often face challenges when integrated into existing vehicles. In contrast, DB Lightgate provides an efficient and cost-effective solution that is installed directly into existing infrastructure, bypassing the need for modifications to the trains themselves.

The adaptable Lightgate technology is suitable for any passenger trains with opposing window surfaces. Its modular design allows for rapid integration into existing infrastructure, and its installation on standard support systems ensures easy scalability with maximum efficiency.

Data is transmitted wirelessly and meets strict data protection standards. The system is self-powered for outdoor use. DB Lightgate scans passing trains using advanced optical sensors to capture real-time data on occupancy rates, train class, number of carriages, and speed. This information is immediately processed and can be seamlessly integrated into our customers' systems for a variety of applications.

Use Cases

Operational Efficency

DB Lightgate offers a comprehensive range of applications for railway operations. Occupancy data plays a critical role in operational scheduling by identifying which trains may face delays due to high occupancy levels. These insights allow dispatchers and train controllers to incorporate occupancy levels into their decision-making processes. This facilitates smoother train integration at junctions and helps maintain punctuality. Additionally, our data supports optimized train scheduling, effective emergency management, and the coordination of replacement services, enhancing overall traffic management.

Passenger Experience

DB Lightgate delivers essential data to address passenger needs effectively. By providing real-time capacity information, passengers can choose the right connections and locate available seats tailored to their preferences. This boosts customer satisfaction and helps passengers reach their destinations more quickly, reliably, and comfortably. Moreover, active guidance for passengers aids in improving punctuality across the entire rail system.

Our innovative system is used for a variety of purposes, including passenger flow management on platforms, operational optimization, and providing data for research and development projects.

Innovative Solution for Real-Time Rail Occupancy Monitoring

DB Lightgate provides real-time, precise monitoring of train carriage occupancy. Designed for intelligent operational management and a tailored passenger experience, DB Lightgate is versatile, self-sufficient, and fully compliant with data protection standards.

About us

The mobility shift in Hamburg is progressing rapidly. By 2030, the goal is for every resident to have access to excellent public transport within five minutes, from morning till night. When the “Hamburg-Takt” was introduced, we questioned how to further improve traffic flow for the S-Bahn Hamburg.

At present, many parts of the German rail network are running beyond full capacity, and traffic continues to rise. Efficient capacity and occupancy management is key to achieving high operational quality and passenger satisfaction. Therefore, we developed a digital, innovative solution for monitoring occupancy in real time.

We explored various technologies and, due to the different train types that do not allow for onboard installation, we embarked on our own product development journey. With DB Lightgate, we measure occupancy at the carriage level in real time. Our system is installed in the infrastructure rather than in the vehicles, ensuring that installation and maintenance do not disrupt operations.

Since January 2023, DB Lightgate has been implemented at selected S-Bahn Hamburg stations and is now expanding throughout the entire network. But our ambitions don't stop there. Our innovation aims to enhance rail transport efficiency, reliability, and comfort beyond Hamburg. We constantly evolve our product to deliver a flexible and superior solution for our customers' use cases, vehicles, networks, and passengers. DB Lightgate is currently active in five networks and monitors thousands of train journeys every day.
